Supporting Successful Summer Break Transitions

As the school year comes to a close, many students experience changes in routine, expectations, and daily structure. While summer can be an exciting time, these transitions can also be challenging for some learners. To help support students and families during this time, we have developed a Summer Break Transitions Google Drive folder that is available to teachers and support staff.

The Google Drive contains a growing collection of resources designed to help students maintain routines, build independence, and navigate the transition from school to summer. Resources can be used in classrooms before the end of the school year, shared with families, or adapted to meet individual student needs.

One featured resource is the Summer Choice Board, a hands-on activity that encourages students to make choices, stay engaged, and participate in meaningful summer activities. The choice board can be personalized to suit a student's interests and support needs, making it appropriate for a wide range of ages and grade levels.

Printed copies of the Summer Choice Board are available for families to pick up at the Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey office in Membertou First Nation.

The goal of these resources is to provide practical supports that can help students feel prepared and confident as they move into summer break. Whether a student benefits from visual supports, predictable routines, or opportunities to practice independence, these tools can help create a smoother transition between school and home.

What is Rally Reader?

Rally Reader is a tool that helps students improve their reading. Students can pick from more than 50,000 books and practice reading out loud. As they read, an AI coach gives them tips and feedback in real-time. It tracks how students are doing and makes reading fun and more accessible. This platform became available to our schools in May.

Rally Reader provides a comprehensive suite of features designed to support and empower students throughout their literacy journey:

• AI Coach: This personalized assistant helps students tackle challenging vocabulary and master correct pronunciation in real-time.
• No Stress Environment: By allowing students to practice reading out loud independently, the platform removes the pressure of peer judgment and reduces performance anxiety.
• Helpful Learning Tools: Integrated dictionaries provide instant access to word meanings, ensuring students maintain comprehension without interrupting their reading flow.
• Customizable Visuals: Students can tailor the reading experience to their specific needs by adjusting text size and overall visual appearance to maximize readability.
• Universal Accessibility: The system is designed for flexibility, supporting both online and offline usage when books are downloaded, as well as providing options for silent reading or reading aloud.
• Progress Tracking: The platform generates detailed analytics that highlight reading speed and overall proficiency, allowing students to visualize their improvement over time.

Tools for Teachers

Teachers get clear data to see where students need help. They can manage classes, change student profiles, and assign specific books to groups. If using iPads, teachers can use Apple Classroom to watch student screens while they read to see their progress in real-time. This allows students to move more freely around the classroom while still being able to keep students accountable and monitor what they’re doing.
